"Do we apply the day for a year in prophecy every time a day is mentioned in the Bible? Of course not! We only apply the day being symbolic of one literal year where a symbol is employed in the prophecy."

"We have no license to apply the principal where no symbol and where no prophecy is present."

(2  In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. 2 Corinthians 13:1

The principal of a day for a year in prophecy is indeed warranted and endorsed by more than 2 witnesses. Moses wrote,

After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. Numbers 14:34

Ezekiel was also instructed to apply this principal when he wrote,

And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year. Ezekiel 4:6

There is another principal we need to be aware of when arriving at proper hermeneutics and interpretation of the scripture, and it is this,

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20

Moses represents the law or what is known as the Book of the Law which is the first five books of the Bible. Ezekiel himself was a prophet of the Lord. John heard the testimony of the angel who said that “the spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus” – Revelation 19:10. The day for a year principal is given witness in both the Book of the LAW and in the TESTIMONY of the prophets. Therefore there is in fact LIGHT in the teaching of a day for a year principal.

Jesus Himself is the LIGHT, and the giver of all such light. In fact Jesus is the third witness in the Bible to support a day for year principal. Let’s examine two examples in the gospel of Luke where Christ does this very thing.

Luke 13:31-33
31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.
32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
33 Nevertheless I must walk today, and tomorrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

For this to be literally true Christ would have had to spoken this 3 days before his crucifixion which was Tuesday of what is commonly called the “Passion Week”. However He spoke this years before he actually died at calvalry. The only right interpretation of the words of Jesus in this passage is to apply the day for a year principal. Jesus predicted his ministry would not be hindered or stopped by Herod for three more years. The Pharisees were warning Jesus that Herod would kill Him. Jesus knew full well and made it known that no earthly power could cut His ministry short of what was clearly predicted to in Daniel 9 in the 70 week prophecy to be a 3 and ˝ year ministry.

Do we apply the day for a year in prophecy every time a day is mentioned in the Bible? Of course not! We only apply the day being symbolic of one literal year where a symbol is employed in the prophecy.

In Daniel 7 we have symbolic beasts representing kingdoms. The time there mentioned is surrounded with symbols. Daniel 9 was given in connection to the visions seen several years earlier in chapter 8 which too had numerous symbolic symbols. Revelation 10 - 13 are both surrounded with symbols.

This warrants us to apply the day for a year principal in all of these cases.

The 1260 days
The time times and dividing of a time
The 42 months = all of which equal the 1260 years of papal rule.

The 70 weeks which announced the close of probation upon Israel as God’s chosen people and Jerusalem as his chosen City.

The 2300 days this announced the date for the Investigative judgment to begin.

The parable of the vineyard in Luke 13 had the symbol of the vineyard.

Once again all of these time prophecies are submersed in symbolism and this is what warrants to apply a day being symbolic of one literal year.

We have no license to apply the principal where no symbol and where no prophecy is present. That is why we do not apply the principal else where in scripture.

An astute person may say, yes that all sounds reasonable David, but the example you gave of Jesus’ message to Herod had no symbol in it.

But friend it did let’s look at it again.

A beast in Bible Prophecy represents a Kingdom.

The Lion in Daniel 7 represented Babylon

The Bear = Medo-Persia

The Leopard = Greece

The terrible beast or dragon represented Rome

In the book of Genesis the Pharaoh had a dream of 7 fat cows and 7 lean cows. These cows represented Egypt.

Now that we have these examples lets look at the words of Jesus again.

And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. Luke 13:32

The Fox represented Herod’s kingdom. Thus a symbol is used here as well.

The example in Jeremiah about the 70 years of captivity does not apply. It is a literal event, given without symbolic language.
